Buying a wedding dress can be an arduous process. You might find yourself trying on at least a dozen or so gowns before finding the perfect dress. Start the process at least seven months prior to the wedding if you are having the dress made.
- Cut out pictures from bridal and fashion magazines, shop online and look at old family photos to home in on your preferred style.
- Ask friends and family for references on dressmakers and designers if you are having the dress made or altered.
- Bring a friend whose opinion you trust to shop with you at bridal stores. Include your mother if appropriate. Avoid getting too many opinions though as this will ultimately drag out the selection process!
- Bring shoes with the same size heel you expect to wear at the wedding.
- Discuss alteration charges with the salon, once you choose your dress. A typical alterations budget from an independent seamstress will be in the region of £100-200.
- If you decide to have a custom-made dress, allow at least 6 months to ensure plenty of time for fittings and alterations.
- Take home a fabric swatch to match with your shoes, veil, accessories, stationery and decorations.
